AN ORIGINAL AND RARE cocuswood (?) flute from the Paris workshop of Jean-Louis Tulou, Paris ( 1831- 1839 ) .
Three original silver keys showing workmanship of high quality.
One replacement key from the same era, a close match.
Total assembled length, without top tuning crown : 618 mm.
Sounding length, head pushed in, all the way : 542 mm.
Embouchure is unaltered and original, 9.0 mm X 10.9 mm.
All sections stamped “ (birdie logo) / Tulou / Paris”
The instrument plays well at 435 with the head pushed fully in.
The instrument has not been altered or cut shorter. The flute’s interesting in that it shows superior workmanship to the original keys and the mounts. Notice the tenons are all capped in silver, the head and foot sockets are also silver.
The history of Tulou and Nonon relationship is, at least to us, somewhat confused. We believe, however, that this beautiful instrument dates from the years between Nonon’s departure and Tulou’s retirement
.
We give this one a “9.9 out of 10.0” rating. Really nice example, looks like it's been played a bit, still in fine original condition, save for the replacement of the G-sharp key.
It would be, of course, the flute recommended by Tulou to his students at the Paris Conservatory.
$2850.
